In all cases of iron-deficiency anaemia, oral treatment should be continued for some months to build up an adequate store of iron.
In a few cases, where oral iron therapy is not possible, iron-deficiency anaemia can be treated with iron-sorbitol solution by deep i.m. injection, using a ‘Z’ technique to avoid staining the skin. Haemolytic anaemia is characterized by an excessive breakdown of red blood cells, due to disease or toxic agents. Some of these less common anaemias may respond to corticosteroid therapy. The severe anaemia of end-stage renal disease in dialyzed patients differs from other anaemias in being due to a lack of erythropoietin, the kidney hormone that regulates red blood cell production by the bone marrow.
